EV Charger Installation Across Australia

Platinum Solar Group has an Australia-wide network of electricians with years of experience in the installation of electric vehicle chargers in both businesses and at homes. No matter if you've just bought an electric car for the first time or plan to purchase one in the near future, here are a few useful suggestions to get ready for your brand-new electric home-based charging setup.

When you install the charging station to charge your electric vehicle, attention must be given to a variety of security requirements. Our checklist outlines all the important aspects to keep in mind when setting up an electric car charging facility. The information contained within is only an overview, and installations should be done in accordance with the recommendations of the manufacturer as well as the numerous state and territorial regulations in Australia. All electric vehicles should have the installation done by a certified and licensed electrician.

The Right Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment

An electrician who is licensed and certified is required to set up your brand new electric vehicle charger. Before we visit to assess your site and installation, consider the place you'll place your electric vehicle while it's charging. Ideally, you'll want the charge station greater than 3 meters from the connector port on your vehicle. When it comes to charging your vehicle, as time goes on we are witnessing more advanced EVs being released with more speedy charging capacity onboard, utilizing stronger 3-phase connections. If your building is connected to power from a 3 phase supply, then we strongly recommend this type of power is accessible at your residence via an outlet within the garage. If not, select a single-phase connection that has an amp capacity of 32Amps. This will provide you with a power supply of 7.4kW. Our installer will identify the capacity of your home and what updates need to be made.

Our EV chargers feature variable outputs that can be configured to be able to work with single or three-phase connections.

Make sure to place the outlet close to the garage's door or in the location where you want to charge your car. This will allow for the flexibility to ensure that the cable is able to charge your car while it is parked outside or inside and make sure to leave space where the charger can be placed on the wall.

What should be considered prior to installing EV Charging equipment

Our Electricians can give you an estimate over the phone or on-site and start installing the EV charger in your home or office reasonably quickly. Whenever you decide to install an EV charger in Australia, ensure those doing the work are licensed electricians who give you an estimate prior to beginning any work. Remember that the length of the cable will determine the degree of flexibility and the parking options you will have. Something to note, is that the charging cable gets heavier the longer it gets. The average weight is 3kg for a 5m cable and 6kg for 10m cables.

1. Chargers for E-Mobility should be connected using its own cable

No additional appliances should be connected to the cable running directly from the fuse box and the charger. Additional appliances could include washing machines, lights and general household appliances. The utilization ratio will be calculated systematically to be 1 since it takes several hours to fully charge the batteries of vehicles powered by electricity. The circuit that is dedicated to the wall box or charging station is required to adhere to local AS3000 standards. The load connected to the charging station should be able to be fully respected.

2. Choose the right cable for EV Charging

If cables aren't thick enough, they can become hot and there is the risk of burning cables. When the current of charging is at or above 16A, we recommend using a cable with a minimum cross-sectional area of 2.5 millimetres or greater which allows the car to be fully charged using an energy capacity of 11-22 kW. If you are using the use capacity of a 3-phase charger, that requires a 5-conductor power supply cable as well. The diameter of the cable will depend on the length of the cable, as well as the potential drop, the temperature of the environment and kind of installation. Therefore, it's recommended to consult a certified electrician at Platinum Solar Group to identify the correct size of cable you will need. It is recommended to prepare cables that have a three-phase connection (when feasible) to make sure that your project is future-proofed. Electric cars in the near future will feature faster charging speeds and bigger capacity batteries.

3. Residual Circuit Device (RCD) for safety in Electric Vehicles

Residual current devices (RCD) are designed to protect against electric shocks. The RCD regulates the electric currents in the neutral and live wires that connect to and from the appliance, or in this case the electric vehicle. If these currents aren't any longer balanced, as in when a residual current is flowing through the bodywork of the vehicle or driver, and then to the floor, then the RCD triggers and cuts off the circuit. To ensure this happens when an RCD has not been integrated in the charging station every charging station has to be equipped with a unique RCD. To ensure safety, the RCD has an RF diversity of 1.0, meaning that each circuit needs to be secured individually.

4. What Types of Recurrent Current Devices are Available?

A RCD that is rated type A is the minimum required for every charging station. Type A RCDs are an ordinary RCD protection switch used by certified electricians that only registers certain fault currents. Some electric cars may generate smooth DC fault currents during charging. If you can't rule out such a possibility a suitable DC protective device for residual current should be put in place. There are many options to address this.

  • RCD Type B: A type B RCD can be described as "sensitive to any current" and can recognize all kinds of AC and DC residual currents and is well-suited to charger station installations. This is the preferred RCD of choice in this scenario.
  • The various chargers of the Platinum Solar Group range include an integrated RCD, Type A or B.

5. Installing the correct circuit breaker that matches your charger

The circuit breaker makes sure that the circuit will be shut off in the event that too much power circulates across the cables. This will ensure that damage to cables by the heating process can be prevented. Like the RCD, it is necessary to have an additional circuit breaker for a new charger station circuit.

The manufacturers of our electric vehicle charging stations suggest circuit breakers that have the characteristic of tripping C.

The circuit breaker should be aligned with the nominal voltage, for the necessary charging power. It poses a risk of risk to the safety of others, so the installation must be performed by a licensed electrician. They are accountable to ensure that all current guidelines and standards for installation are adhered to.
