Already have a Tesla Powerwall 2 but need more battery storage?
Eligible Powerwall 2 owners can now expand their existing system by adding a Tesla Powerwal with the option to include Powerwall 3 Expansion units for even greater capacity.
This allows you to store more solar energy, extend your blackout backup and reduce your reliance on grid electricity without removing a functioning Powerwall 2 system.
Can You Add Powerwall 3 to Powerwall 2?
Yes. Powerwall 3 can now be added to eligible Powerwall 2 systems through Tesla’s backwards compatibility update.
A supported configuration can include:
- Up to 4 Tesla Powerwall 2 units
- 1 Tesla Powerwall 3
- Up to 3 Powerwall 3 Expansion units
Powerwall 3 becomes the lead unit while the existing Powerwall 2 batteries continue operating alongside it. Together, the batteries function as one integrated Tesla energy system.
This provides a practical upgrade path for Powerwall 2 owners who need more capacity but do not want to remove or replace the batteries they already have.
Why Add Powerwall 3 to Your Existing System?
Adding Powerwall 3 gives you more stored energy for use overnight, during periods of higher electricity consumption or when solar generation is low.
Additional battery capacity may help keep your home powered for longer during a grid outage. Backup time will depend on your battery configuration, electricity use and the appliances connected to backup.
A larger solar battery system can capture more excess solar power during the day for use in the evening or overnight.
More battery storage can help you use more of your own solar energy and reduce the amount of electricity purchased from the grid.
Backwards compatibility allows you to expand your Tesla energy system while continuing to use your existing Powerwall 2 batteries.

A Powerwall 3 expansion may be suitable if you:

Every Powerwall installation is different. Your battery configuration, Gateway, metering equipment, switchboard, solar system and available installation space must be assessed before compatibility can be confirmed.
How Does a Powerwall 2 to Powerwall 3 Expansion Work?
We review your Powerwall 2 configuration, solar system, switchboard, Gateway, metering and available installation space.
If your system is compatible, we recommend a suitable Powerwall 3 configuration based on your storage and backup requirements.
Powerwall 3 and any required Expansion units are installed, configured and updated with compatible Tesla software.
Your Powerwall 2, Powerwall 3 and any Expansion units operate together as one integrated Tesla battery system.
Important Powerwall Compatibility Requirements
Not every Powerwall 2 installation can support Powerwall 3 without additional work.
Tesla Gateway 1
Tesla Gateway 1 is not supported with a mixed Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 system. A compatible Gateway upgrade will be required.
Neurio Metering
Systems using Neurio Meters will require suitable metering changes or replacement equipment.
Three-Phase Properties
For three-phase connections, Tesla currently limits Powerwall 3 output to 5 kW within this configuration.
Your Powerwall must also have Tesla software version 26.26 or later. All requirements will be checked as part of your compatibility assessment.
Is Powerwall 3 Backwards Compatibility Right for You?
Expanding your system may be worth considering if your Powerwall 2 regularly runs low, no longer provides enough blackout backup or cannot keep up with your household electricity use.
A Powerwall 3 expansion may be suitable if you:
